Alpha Hydroxy AcidsAlpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) Alpha Hydroxy Acids are a group of compounds found in a variety of food sources. Glycolic acid is the widely used in skin care products and is most commonly derived from sugar cane. However, the other alpha hydroxy acids in the group such as lactic (from sour milk), tartaric (from grapes), citric (from citrus fruits), and malic (from apples) are finding their way into use as well. Alpha Hydroxy acids improve the feel and appearance of the skin by loosening and dissolving a glue-like protein that binds the dead skin cells (corneocytes) on the surface of the skin. As the dead skin cells are loosened and fall away, a smoother and younger-appearing complexion is revealed. The regular use of alpha hydroxy acids has been shown to soften fine lines and wrinkles, improve dry skin, help control blemishes, and reduce the discoloration commonly referred to as "age spots".
