Sensitive skin needs special, gentle care. Each case must receive individual attention because sensitivities can vary. This type of skin care program is designed to calm the skin and prevent irritation by using simple, gentle techniques; by using and varying products that are well tolerated; and by eliminating the conditions that cause problems.

If you have sensitive skin, pay close attention to it. If it becomes irritated from any part of your skin care program such as the type of cleanser, the temperature of the water, the number of times you cleanse, the toner, or the moisturizer - the program will need to be changed. Certain parts may need to be eliminated.

Many sensitive skinned people make their own cosmetics so they can completely avoid the ingredients they know are allergic. Remember the simpler, the better for sensitive skin - both in product ingredients and routines.

Steps For Sensitive Skin Care Program :

  • Compressing :

    Use tepid or warm facial compresses, not hot or cold.

  • Cleansing :

    Sensitive skin should be cleansed only once a day that is also suitable most if in the evening and using milky or creamy cleanser. Never use soap on sensitive skin. Avoid cleanser with complicated and elaborate ingredients. Again the simpler better - as long as the ingredients are safe and natural.   • Steaming :

    If sensitive skin is steamed, the source of steam should be a distance from the face so that it is not hot on the skin. This distance will need to be determined at the time you are steaming. For some steamers your face will be foot away and for others it may only be six inches - but you should not feel any heat from the steam on your face.

  • Exfoliate :

    Exfoliation is not generally recommended for sensitive skin because it can be irritating. Yet, exfoliation may be beneficial and in some cases, it is well tolerated, depending on sensitivity of the skin. Green papaya and alpha hydroxy acids are the two good exfoliants , the green papaya is better suited for sensitive skin.

  • Aromatherapy treatments :

    Look for the products such as moisturizers, misters, and cleansers that contain very gentle essential oils such as chamomile(Roman), lavender and rose in low percentage.

    Clay masks and cream masks both can be used by sensitive skin depending on the requirements. If the skin is dry and sensitive then use cream masks. If the skin is oily and sensitive then use clay masks.

  • Eye creams :

    Eye creams are useful for sensitive skin to protect the delicate eye area. As always check the ingredients for items you cannot tolerate.

  • Facial Misting :

    Misting is wonderfully refreshing and hydrating skin care treatment and is usually well tolerated by sensitive skin. For the skin that is irritated or inflamed misting the face with chamomile tea can be very soothing.

Suggested routine for Sensitive Skin :

  • Daily :

    In the morning : Because sensitive skin requires only one thorough cleansing a day, just splash your face with warm water or use warm-water compresses. Apply a moisturizer, an eye cream, and lip balm. Mist.

    In the evening : Compress, cleanse, tone. Apply light moisturizer, a small amount of jojoba oil, or gentle aromatherapy facial oil. Apply an eye cream, and lip balm. Mist.

  • Weekly :

    Use a papaya enzyme exfoliating mask, if your skin can tolerate it.

  • Monthly : Steam once or twice a month if you have decided it is helpful for your skin.

Special Considerations for oily skin :

  1. The very sensitive skin are of the nose and on the eyelids.

  2. As many as one in four people react negatively to artificial fragrances in products.

  3. Be aware that a product labeled "hypoallergenic" is not a guarantee that you will have an allergic reaction.

  4. Not everyone who thinks they have sensitive skin actually does.

  5. To help to calm sensitive skin that is red or irritated : try cool water compresses, calamine lotion, or chamomile tea compresses.
